Borough Code § 391-2 provides that “No worldly employment or business, except works of necessity and charity, shall be performed or practiced by any person within the Borough on the first day of the week,” and the exemption lists at §§ 391-3 and 391-4 — drugs, meals and prepared food, perishables, newspapers, milk and baked goods, recreation and sport, conveyances and motor fuel, tobacco, and residential real estate in the Borough — do not name building maintenance or contract cleaning. The prohibition is written against employment and business rather than against sales, so it reaches the work itself. The county-level Sunday statute is a separate instrument; it was not read for this page and nothing here describes it.

Not as an assumption. Paramus Borough Code § 391-2 prohibits worldly employment on Sunday except works of necessity and charity, and neither exemption list at §§ 391-3 or 391-4 names building maintenance or contract cleaning. Whether a given clean qualifies as a work of necessity is unsettled, and we found no case deciding it. There is also a separate immunity at § 391-5 for someone who uniformly observes the seventh day and works in his own home or workshop, which does not reach a contractor in your building. Sunday work inside Paramus will be treated as a question for the building owner and the Borough Clerk for a specific address. What this page will not do is tell you the answer for anywhere else. Only Paramus's chapter was read for it; the county-level statute is a separate instrument that was not, and each of Bergen County's other sixty-nine municipalities has its own code. An earlier version of this answer said a Sunday clean elsewhere in the county was generally straightforward. That was a claim about sixty-nine codes nobody here had opened, and it has been removed rather than softened.
